She's 100% right.
So I work I healthcare. I'm in management. I don't touch patients. Not qualified for that.
But I help make sure the hospital stays open and the lights stay on.
I'm also massively prounion, and pro-universal healthcare.
So that said, I hope they rip that fucking prick in the recording a new asshole. I hope the feds come after him for that HIPAA violation and they beat him so badly that the other hospital administrators only dare whisper about his fate after a few drinks.
Follow this lady's advice. And if they are fucking you, get help and get what's owed. No mercy.
This is right.
HOWEVER.
Do not ask for an itemized bill while you are currently being treated in an emergency room.
I can’t tell you how many times I have had people go off on me in the ER because I can’t give them an itemized bill at time of service. The people who do the billing and coding receive your chart and everything after you’re discharged and then do all their billing and coding stuff. Sometimes things cost different depending on what your diagnosis was or how long your stay was or whether you were admitted. All of that takes time and has to be done by someone who went to school for it.
When the ER registration people ask you for money at time of service, just say no, you’d like to be billed. End of discussion. If it’s an actual hospital (as opposed to a standalone ER) then you don’t have to pay right then. We don’t have the ability to print out a list of everything and tell you exactly how much it is - the amount they ask for is either going to be the copay for your insurance company or a “good faith payment” - usually $150-$250 towards your services. You know what button we do have (at least in every registration system I’ve worked with)? We have the option to select “no payment- patient requested final bill.”
I promise we are not trying to be this guy - most of the ER registrars I’ve worked with are supporters of universal healthcare and don’t think anyone should be paying at time of service. I’ll tell people straight up not to pay anything today and tell them about itemized bills. ER registrars don’t get paid enough to be on the hospital’s side on these things.

Does this still -
It does! Tap through to the original post and it still does.
Ok so literally no pressure, but I do have a kofi and if anyone feels like showing appreciation for my writing or art or I guess my cat via its medium, now would be a good time because there's a thing I really want to buy and I don't have enough birthday money left over for it lmao
(the thing is an art oriented android tablet. So that I can still draw shit when post work exhaustion compels me to collapse in bed against my desire to,,, you know, draw things.)
